New 18" Rubber for Vintage Race Bikes

Postby Brian Stevenson » Mon Feb 26, 2024 10:28 am

It seems to be either feast or famine with vintage 18" tyres. Pirelli have launched a new line of 18" racing rubber for vintage race bikes.

It's the spec tire for CRMC, Classic TT and Classic Europe Endurance Cup. Those all used to be AVON.

I believe its the same SC1 and SC2 compounds that come on the Diablo Supercorsa.

Anyway another option - https://www.pirelli.com/tyres/en-ww/motorcycle/catalogue/product/phantom-sportscomp-rs

Thanks for sharing Brian!

Certainly something to think about next time around.

Have you priced them yet?

Are they available here in the great white north?
Metzler and Conti both offer 18" race radial rubber... NA in Canada.

and I betcha the carcass of these is the same as the Metzler... but with a cool retro tread pattern. I used to run Phantoms back in the day... I also used to crash a lot

I actually didn't try to price them. I had been talking to them about Endurance Tires for a P3 bike and they sent those as an option as they fit on skinny rims.

I would imagine that Wayne could get them as he is a Pirelli race tire dealer and I know he can get odd stuff like the Supercorsa TD's.

I wonder if they just relabeled the metzlers that come out of their factory

Possibly, but they do come in different sizes so you can get a proper 90/90 18 that would fit the CB350 front. I think the RR smallest front is 110/80 18.

It could very well just be a branding thing as well where smaller bike sizes are Branded Pirelli.

A friend in Italy said these are good race tires, but wear quickly. No personal experience obviously, just passing along what I was told.
Which way'd they go?
