1931 Panther piston mod

Postby Ray Roberts #115 » Mon Dec 10, 2012 11:16 pm

Warning: Don't try this at home. I told Rick Yates I think I found a piston that just might work or not...
I bet Dave King has done something like this before, well I hope he has.

a bolt on extension?
what kind of graded bolt are you using?
locking compound for the bolt? Can't think of any locktite high temperature enough.

Two piece diesel pistons survive every day for thousands of hours...

I didn't know diesel pistons were 2 piece, I feel better already.
The Panther doesn't rev very high being a long stroke 500 single.
The bolts are just grade 8 1/4 20 cap screws and I am using red loctite 450 deg and the 1/2 inch diameter post goes through the new piston and is peened over, I was going to weld it but I thought weld could crack so I riveted it.

Good job Ray, looks like something out my past. Have you thought of moving the top compression ring up onto the extension ?

I did think about that Dave but then thought whats the point? since those pictures I did machine a few narrow grooves in the upper part.
