1957 Manx 30M short stroke

Postby Ron Grable » Fri Aug 02, 2013 6:27 pm

The Manx is a 1957 30M 500cc short stroke, originally purchased and raced in Canada by Canadian Champion Mike Duff. In 1960 it was shipped to the Norton Works, rebuilt and updated to ‘60 specifications, plus a Francis Beart front brake aluminum stabilizing ring. Mike then rode it in the 1960 Isle of Man Senior race, and other races in England and the Continent. In 1962 Mike became a Works Yamaha rider, so the Manx was shipped home, where it was raced by various owners. I obtained it in 1988.

Over an extended period, I restored the Manx to pristine condition, as follows:

All frame and accessory parts were powder coated black.
Wheels were trued, polished, and restrung with stainless steel spokes
All aluminum surfaces polished and clear coated
Seat was re-upholstered
Fuel and oil tanks were straightened and painted to original specs
Metal parts stripped and chrome plated
Period correct windscreen and number plates were fitted
New fork spring covers

The engine was rebuilt by Canadian Manx engine specialists Harding Engineering

New big end crankpin assembly with Carillo rod, Cosworth piston and rings
New big end bearings
New cylinder liner
New inlet and exhaust valves, guides, bushings, pushrods, cams, and springs
New oil pump
New magneto coil
New magneto and primary chains
New front brake, rev counter, clutch, and throttle cables
New oil lines
Replacement clutch center
